However, given that you are meant to be able to join the rooms as a guest, without a messenger/FB account, they shouldn't need to anyway. That may be stubborn, but it is their choice. This is obviously causing a bit of an issue when trying to get family who only have Apple devices to be able to join the room, as some of those family members specifically do not want to create a Facebook account for themselves. However, on EVERY Apple device we've tried (a couple of iPads and an iPhone) we open the link in Safari and it says "browser not supported, please use Chrome" (or words to that effect), but when I open in Chrome, it just says "browser not supported, use Messenger". On PC, the link can be opened in Chrome and the person can join the room as a guest. I have family members who do not have a FB/Messenger account, so I followed the instructions I've found online and sent the link to myself so I could forward it to those people to then join, as it does say people without FB/Messenger accounts can still join the rooms. I'm wanting to do a room video chat/call with several family members, so I set up a room, invited those that had a FB/messenger account, and they could join fine. So I got myself a Portal TV, and it's been great so far.
